Vrijheid om te spreken of te schrijven is super belangrijk maar spreekt helaas niet vanzelf. Het Writers Unlimited Internationaal Literatuurfestival opent met human voices (het thema van deze editie) uit Nederland en het buitenland: een unieke line up van beroemde schrijvers spreekt zich uit.

Dit is zo'n avond voor inspiratie, creatieve gedachten en trefzekere woorden die diepe indruk maken. Maak kennis met de auteurs die vier heerlijke Haagse festivaldagen van zich laten horen!

Deze Opening Night 2024 staat in het teken van vrijheid van het woord en de kracht van literatuur, met optredens en voordrachten van de Amerikaanse auteur Celeste Ng (internationaal een van de best gelezen auteur met Aziatische roots), de Britse schrijver Aminatta Forna (o.a. Het huis met de schaduw), van Adriaan van Dis (onlangs verscheen zijn ontroerende nieuwe roman Naar zachtheid en een warm omhelzen), van de jonge Haagse spoken word artiest Daniëlle Zawadi, van Burhan Sönmez, auteur van o.a. Istanbul, Istanbul en voorzitter van schrijversorganisatie PEN International, en een muzikale performance van schrijver Sholeh Rezazadeh (o.a. de roman Ik ken een berg die op me wacht) en percussionist Hashem Kabreet.

Daarna gaat presentator Jörgen Tjon A Fong in gesprek met de Amerikaanse romanschrijver Celeste Ng (o.a. de roman Onze verloren harten) en de Franse schrijver en fotojournalist Emilienne Malfatto (o.a. De kolonel slaapt niet) over wat 'Human Voices' (het festivalthema) in relatie tot vrije meningsuiting voor hen betekent. Jan van Zanen, burgemeester van Den Haag, geeft tot slot de officiële aftrap en opent het festival!

Onze favoriete Haagse boekhandel De Vries Van Stockum is elke festivaldag in de foyer van Theater aan het Spui aanwezig met rijkgevulde tafels vol boeken (zowel Engels- als Nederlandstalig) van de auteurs die optreden tijdens het festival. Grasduin heerlijk in alle moois, en wie weet is de auteur zelf aanwezig om je net gekochte boek met een persoonlijk woord te signeren!

Freedom to speak or write is extremely important but unfortunately does not come naturally. The Writers Unlimited International Literature Festival The Hague opens with 'human voices' (this edition's theme) from the Netherlands and abroad: a unique line-up of famous writers will speak out.

This is one of those evenings for inspiration, creative thoughts and apt words that make a deep impression. Meet the authors who will make their voices heard for four wonderful days of festival in The Hague!

Opening Night 2024 is all about freedom of speech and the power of literature, with performances and readings by American author Celeste Ng (internationally one of the best-read author with Asian roots), British writer Aminatta Forna (a.o. The Hired Man), by Dutch writer and essayist Adriaan van Dis, by young spoken word artist Daniëlle Zawadi from The Hague, by Burhan Sönmez, author of Istanbul, Istanbul and chairman of writers' organisation PEN International, and a musical performance by writer Sholeh Rezazadeh and percussionist Hashem Kabreet.

Afterwards, presenter Jörgen Tjon A Fong talks to American novelist Celeste Ng (a.o. Our Missing Hearts) and French writer and photojournalist Emilienne Malfatto (a.o. Le colonel ne dort pas) about what 'Human Voices' in relation to free speech means to them. Finally, Jan van Zanen, Mayor of The Hague, will give the official kick-off and open the festival!

Our favourite local bookshop De Vries Van Stockum will be present in the foyer of Theater aan het Spui every festival day with richly stocked tables full of books (both English and Dutch-language) by the authors performing during the festival. Enjoy browsing, and who knows, maybe the author will be there to sign your newly bought book with a personal word!
