Majid Bekkas
Initiated very early on by Master Maâlem Ba Houmane, the artist Majid Bekkas has set himself a goal for which he has been steadfast like a great helmsman since 1974, when he bought his first Guembri. It is about giving new life and an international dimension to this trance music. Naturally, with the concern of preserving the essence and the original flavor in terms of spirituality, poetic mysticism, pentatonism and traditional instruments, Majid Bekkas proceeds to mergers with certain similar types music, in particular blues, jazz and soul music.
To carry out his project successfully, Majid Bekkas called on renowned musicians such as bluesmen and jazzmen Archie Shepp, Louis Sclavis, Flavio Boltro, Klaus Doldinger and many others. This created a new dialogue between musical diasporas to finally lead to "African Gnaoua Blues".
From then on, Majid Bekkas' vision became clearer during his numerous concerts and high-end musical performances in prestigious international festivals (Womex Sevilla 2003, Gaume Jazz Festival, Huyart Festival, Grenoble Jazz Festival, Festival de Essaouira, etc.) where the magic of trance was felt through unprecedented works, obtaining a real success from the public.
Nominated "Django d'Or" (2004) for his album Mogador, the magician of encounters currently has a rich track record of musical recordings made in Europe, in the company of world-renowned virtuoso musicians such as Juan Carmona, Pedro Soler, Flavio Boltro, Joachim Kuhn, Ramon Lopez, Lionel Haas, etc. But it is with his title "Daymallah" that he represents Morocco in the compilation of the CD "Déserts Blues 2".
Mixing, interbreeding, marriage and grafting with other musical modes are all terms that are part of the Universe of exceptional creativity of Majid Bekkas. He highlights and promotes the recognition of mystical Gnaoua music, among the cultures of the world.
