No Dutch Required

Greetings internationals and Anglophiles!

Het Nationale Theater in The Hague is the largest traveling theatre company in The Netherlands. We entertain audiences of all ages and across the country. You can also find us in three theatres in The Hague: the Koninklijke Schouwburg, Theater aan het Spui and Zaal 3. Each of these venues offers No Dutch Required events, shows, tours and concerts - we welcome all our non-Dutchies and Anglophiles!

No Dutch Required

Our No Dutch Required programming contains performances that are either English spoken, English sur- or subtitled or that are without speech altogether like dance or mime (language no problem).

On this page you can find more about Het Nationale Theater and our theatres, an overview of our No Dutch Required-programme including family shows, and practical information about accessibility and parking facilities.

We hope to see you soon!

We are Het Nationale Theater

Our Productions

Theatre is where people come together. Enjoy the Koninklijke Schouwburg, Theater aan het Spui and Zaal 3, three venues each with their own distinct charm. They have one thing in common: people gather to relish the moment. A show is something to be seen. We show what can’t happen, yet should still be done. Or the other way around. We go overboard, we befriend anything unfamiliar and we tease out the unusual of anything standard. We reflect on our shared histories and revel in the festivities that connect us.

As the biggest traveling theatre company in the Netherlands we aim to produce shows that enhance our vision of the world, but also feel like home. We are in The Hague, the city of Peace and Justice, surrounded by the political spectacle—something we are keen to address. This comes together in our venues: join the conversation about power and powerlessness, recognize loneliness, and celebrate joy. Classical plays are shown in a new light. Stories from the past turn out to be relevant today. New talent clears out the clogged drains, and that is important, especially in this city. New voices tell stories you haven't heard before but might recognize anyway. We support creators with their eyes fixed on infinity, helping them showcase their best work.

Our theatres

Koninklijke Schouwburg
Plays, cabaret, a dance performance or an impressive opera: the Koninklijke Schouwburg (Royal Theatre) is an urban palace for everyone. Dress up, wear your prettiest gown, or be comfortable on your sneakers! The Koninklijke Schouwburg is a fancy home away from home.

Theater aan het Spui
With Filmhuis Den Haag, Amare and the Central Library as neighbours, we can truly say that Theater aan het Spui is situated at the cultural heart of the city. Theater aan het Spui is our so-called Black Box theatre, with an easygoing and approachable atmosphere. Here you will find a wide range of programmes, from (physical) theatre, performance and dance to literature, music, debates and festivals. Theater aan het Spui offers a stage to different genres for different people.

Zaal 3
Our smallest and most intimite theatre on De Constant Rebecqueplein plays a big role in the development of young professionals. In Zaal 3 we offer beginning artists a stage and an opportunity to become self-supporting. As a visitor of Zaal 3 you are introduced to fresh talent and directly attribute to the growth of their careers, while being an exclusive witness to the start of their journey towards larger audiences and bigger theatres.

Our three theatres are all located in our hometown The Hague.

We want to make you feel at home

To ensure that all our visitors feel welcome and at ease we have launched HNTonbeperkt (HNTunlimited). With HNTonbeperkt we work together with people with a disability to find out how we can make a visit to our theaters as welcoming and easy as possible. We can change seats, lights and sound or we can facilitate a sign language interpreter. The sky is the limit for our visitors!

More information about accessibility can be found further on this page in Dutch. Feel free to contact us at onbeperkt@hnt.nl if you have a question, request or an idea!

Accessibility

We value inclusivity and do our best to make our theatres accessible for everyone. In case of any form of disability that leads to special requests, book your tickets via 088-3565356 or send an email to service@hnt.nl. This way we can ask the necessary questions to get everything sorted for your visit. We are very flexible and our goal is to ensure that you will have the best experience. The more we know about your specific wishes, the more we can do to make your visit as pleasant as possible. We can change seats, lights and sound or we can facilitate a sign language interpreter. The sky is the limit for our visitors!

More about disabled parking spaces can be found further on this page under 'parking'

Wheelchairs

All of our theatres are wheelchair friendly.
However, in Zaal 3 it is not possible to access the bathroom with an electrical wheelchair due to the angle of rotation.

For a visit to de Koninklijke Schouwburg it is not possible to book a wheelchair-friendly seat online. Please call 088-3565356 or send an email to service@hnt.nl so that we can book the proper tickets for you.

In Theater aan het Spui and Zaal 3 you can just buy a ticket online, because these theatres do not have fixed seats. Still, make sure you give us a call in advance so that we know you are coming and can accomodate you in the best way possible.

N.B. If you are visiting any of our theatres with a wheelchair please make sure you always contact service@hnt.nl or 088-3565356 in advance.
