In The Monster Trilogy, five exceptional performers hold up a mirror to three world-famous horror icons: Frankenstein, Dracula and Hyde. They dive deep into the inner worlds of those we fear and reject, but who we may resemble more than we'd like to admit. This whirlwind theatrical trip full of horror, humour and music challenges you to look at yourself and others through the eyes of the outsider. What do the outcasts, these "monsters", actually want to tell us about their world?

The Monster Trilogy is a work by the legendary theatre maker, writer and performer Michael Matthews (1958-1996), which in the hands of director Nita Kersten transforms into a theatrical nightclub, a gothic concert, a horror opera, and a love letter to everyone who has ever felt like an outsider, or fallen through the cracks of our modern society. All in one performance.

Matthews' masterpiece full of opera, poetry and madness returns to the stage

When Nita Kersten discovered the work of theatre maker Michael Matthews, she was hooked instantly. How could it be that someone like Matthews, an absolute standout in the 1980s and '90s who died far too young, had almost vanished from our collective memory? Together with De Nationale Opera, RIGHTABOUTNOW INC., internationally acclaimed composer Cassie Kinoshi and dramaturg Maarten van Hinte, Nita Kersten brings The Monster Trilogy, Matthews' masterpiece full of opera, poetry and madness, back to where it belongs: on stage.

In The Monster Trilogy, Michael Matthews took three iconic 19th-century gothic figures as his starting point. He gave each one their own part of the trilogy and blew them up into modern myths, such as a lonely monster longing for love, and a pizza delivery boy infected with AIDS in Dracula's castle. Forget everything you think you know about monsters, because this utterly overwhelming performance shows you: the outsider, the monster, lives in each of us. You just have to dare to see it.
