Kunst in Theater aan het Spui
Boven de bar van Theater aan het Spui hangt sinds kort een nieuw lichtkunstwerk van kunstenaars Vendel & De Wolf. Lichtkunstwerk Perspectief is een werk in opdracht van Het Nationale Theater. Je leest hieronder meer over het werk en de makers.

'Theater betekent voor ons een veelvoud aan disciplines, van dans tot cabaret of toneel. Een levendige en dynamische kunstvorm die voortdurend evolueert. Een krachtige kunstvorm om verhalen te vertellen, sociale kwesties aan te kaarten en menselijke ervaringen te verkennen, en dat in talloze stijlen en vormen. Zenden of ontvangen is aan de kijker
Het werk is een tweearmige antenne gemaakt met aan elkaar gelaste aluminium buizen. Op de buis zitten ledlijnen die verschillende kleuren kunnen aannemen. Deze lichtlijnen volgen de constructie op drie verschillende manieren. Zie je een bliksem, strepen of een scherpe punt? Welke vorm en kleur je kiest bepaalt wat je ziet. Aan het begin van de twee armen zit een radarreflector. Dat is een maritiem apparaat dat het uitgezonden signaal precies terugstuurt naar de zender. Als je bij de reflector staat zie je jezelf altijd in de spiegel staan. Zenden of ontvangen, het is aan de kijker.
Over de makers
De Nederlandse kunstenaars Paul Vendel en Sandra de Wolf hebben elkaar ontmoet tijdens hun studie Audiovisuele Kunst en Fotografie aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie en zijn sindsdien samen. Ze werken al 32 jaar samen en apart van elkaar als Vendel & De Wolf. Hun portfolio bestaat uit werken in opdracht voor de publieke ruimte, tijdelijke installaties voor tentoonstellingen en lichtkunstwerken voor festivals. Lichtkunstwerk Perspectief, boven de bar van Theater aan het Spui is een werk in opdracht van Het Nationale Theater.
Fototentoonstelling Vendel & De Wolf
Tijdens het maakproces fotografeert Sandra de Wolf alle werken die in de maak zijn. In deze tijdelijk fototentoonstelling zien we de verschillende fases van het werk Perspectief die nu in de foyer van Theater aan het Spui hangt. De tentoonstelling is ook een overzicht van eerdere werken die Vendel & De Wolf de afgelopen 34 jaar maakten. In opdracht, voor festivals maar ook autonome werken.

Transmitting or receiving is up to the spectator
The artwork is a dual-armed antenna made of welded aluminum tubes. LED strips, capable of displaying various colors, run along the structure. These light lines follow the construction in three distinct patterns. Do you see lightning, streaks, or a sharp point? The shape and color you perceive depend on your interpretation. At the ends of the two arms are radar reflectors—maritime devices designed to precisely return a signal to its source. Standing by the reflector, you always see yourself reflected in the mirror. Transmitting or receiving—it’s up to the spectator.
About the Creators
Dutch artists Paul Vendel and Sandra de Wolf met during their studies in Audiovisual Arts and Photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and have been together ever since. For 32 years, they have worked both collaboratively and individually as Vendel & De Wolf. Their portfolio includes commissioned works for public spaces, temporary installations for exhibitions, and light art for festivals.
The light artwork Perspectief, above the bar in Theater aan het Spui, was created on commission for Het Nationale Theater.
Photo Exhibition Vendel & De Wolf
During the creation process, Sandra de Wolf photographs all the works in progress. In this temporary photo exhibition, we see the various stages of the work "Perspectief" which is currently displayed in the foyer of Theater aan het Spui. The exhibition also provides an overview of previous works created by Vendel & De Wolf over the past 34 years. These include commissioned pieces, works for festivals, as well as autonomous works.
