A Brief History of the Grote Zaal
In the heart of The Hague stands the Koninklijke Schouwburg, now a beloved theatre, but it wasn’t always one. The building was originally designed in 1766 as a palace for Princess Carolina of Orange-Nassau and Prince Charles Christian of Nassau-Weilburg. Due to political circumstances, they never came to live here, and the palace remained unfinished and empty for many years. That changed when enterprising citizens of The Hague gave it a new purpose: in 1804, it opened its doors as a theatre for the city.
Inside, the details immediately stand out. The ceiling painting depicts the muses of comedy and tragedy, symbols of theatre itself. Above the stage you’ll find the letters SPQH (Senatus Populusque Haganus), meaning “for the senate and the people of The Hague” a clear statement that this theatre was meant for everyone. The boxes on either side of the stage, bearing the coats of arms of the royal family and the city, may not offer the best view of the performance, but they provide an excellent view of the audience, exactly as intended.
