    Hall 1

After having set audiences alight in the Netherlands, Europe and Indonesia with Ghost Track (2011) and LIGHT (2016), the dance and music ensemble LeineRoebana is now collaborating with the Black Pencil music ensemble on Farewell Future Welcome World, the third part of their Indonesia trilogy.

A mesmerising ritual to confront the hardened world, and a passionate plea for the binding power of dance and music.

Farewell Future Welcome World is a unique dialogue between LeineRoebana and a select group of Indonesian artists with whom they first collaborated fifteen years ago. Since that time they have built a long-lasting artistic and personal bond with these artists and look to the future with shared curiosity. The Dutch ensemble Black Pencil adds an adventurous spirit to the collaboration with their unique combination of recorder, pan flute, viola, accordion and percussion.

In Farewell Future Welcome World  LeineRoebana weave their dance art with the fibres of Indonesian classical and contemporary dance, the (adjective) sounds of Black Pencil, the stirring sound world of the Sundanese gamelan and the ingenuity of composer Iwan Gunawan.

Introduction on stage

Half an hour before the performance, we invite you, the audience, in the hall to enjoy a unique introduction while the dancers and musicians prepare on stage. You will meet the choreographers, the musicians and the dancers, and hear about some special events, dilemmas and insights that occurred throughout the creative process.

Following the introduction, the performance begins.

Before the performance, at 19:30, there will be an on-stage introduction. The performance will begin right after.

Over eerder werk in de trilogie:

THEATERKRANT ★★★★
"Met LIGHT laat LeineRoebana zien dat ze trefzeker tegen de stroom van negativiteit over het samenleven van verschillende culturen in vaart. Dat heeft niets met naïviteit te maken, zoals sommige politici ons dagelijks willen doen geloven. Het is juist het bewijs dat er van alles kan groeien uit openheid en uitwisseling zonder dat iemand alles achterwege hoeft te laten."

DE VOLKSKRANT ★★★★
"Dans en muziek zwepen elkaar op. Meeslepend."

About LeineRoebana

Throughout their artistic careers Andrea Leine and Harijono Roebana have reinvented themselves several times as a choreography duo. In the early years, their emphasis was on creating a contemporary dance language which was inspired by, and reflected, the developments in science and technology. In the years that followed, dance became increasingly emphasised as a platform for encounters between artists and audiences, between disciplines, movements, ages, cultures, etc. The historical authenticity of the performing artist became part of the concept of the performance. Succeeding performances followed with dance artists of all ages and backgrounds and music from all corners of the globe and eras, performed live and often with commissioned compositions. In 2026, LeineRoebana will celebrate its 35th anniversary.

About Black Pencil

Black Pencil is a game changer ensemble with more than a thousand years of music history as its playing field. The possibilities of an enormous collection of recorders, pan flutes, violas, accordions and percussion instruments are endless, as are the curiosity and imagination of the five musicians. Black Pencil awards various composition prizes and inspires leading composers such as Roderik de Man, Martijn Padding, Klas Torstensson, Calliope Tsoupaki, Yannis Kyriakides, Aart Strootman, Anthony Fiumara, Kate Moore, Wim Henderickx and Moritz Eggert to write new works. The result: a repertoire of over 500 new works. Since their debut in 2010 at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Black Pencil has performed in classical concert halls, on stages and at festivals in Europe, as well as in Indonesia, Venezuela and Turkey.
