Imagine fluorescent strip lights above a screen displaying a frenzied PowerPoint presentation. Imagine a young professional mom giving a semi-intellectual TED Talk about recovering from postnatal depression. Imagine vintage synthesizers accompanying a musical number about your baby falling off the couch. Imagine the world collapsing. Imagine far too much language. Imagine far too little hope. Imagine hope.

In NOISE, Rotterdam-based collective Club Gewalt asks itself: how do you function under the constant noise of information predicting the apocalypse? A performance that begins as a hallucinatory seminar on an existential crisis ends in a cathartic immersion in Noise.

In the immersive performance opera NOISE, Club Gewalt explores an alternative to freezing. The future has arrived: burying our heads in the sand is no longer an option, but doomscrolling the internet and compulsively reading self-help books aren’t particularly constructive either. Can we allow the noise in and process it on an emotional level? Can we learn to accept the collapse of systems as a law of the cosmos, without abandoning our protest against injustice? Can we prepare ourselves for the polycrisis by letting go of our resistance to our own vulnerability?

We live in an age of polycrisis: we are simultaneously confronted with the rise of fascism, the arrival of the climate crisis, Western complicity in a genocide, fruit and vegetables contaminated with PFAS, and our own identities turning out to be riddled with (internalized) sexism, racism and homophobia. Where once we were promised a future of stability and progress, all the systems around us — and within us — now seem on the verge of collapse. The human survival instinct (LION! DANGER! FIGHT OR FLIGHT! SURVIVE! CELEBRATE!) falls short when faced with the complexity of today’s crises. Our amygdalas become collectively overstimulated, leaving us stranded in a state of panic limbo.

About Club Gewalt

Club Gewalt is a music-based performance collective from Rotterdam. Rooted in a rejection of injustice and a love for coming together, they create, compose, produce, and perform their own work: from feminist punk Christmas musicals and introspective killjoy operas about institutional racism, to disruptive club nights in museums and political slutpop concerts. Always virtuosic, musical, humorous, and somehow unsettling. Club Gewalt is addicted to its audience and, on the eve of the apocalypse, sings its heart out in an attempt to unlock an alternative timeline. Because in the unknown lies the gateway to change.
