From quickies and raw desire to extraordinary long nights and intimate relationships. What makes the relationship between sex worker and client unique? Based on the experiences of sex workers and their clients, the performance LOVE ME BY THE HOUR unfolds a much broader picture of sex work. Moving beyond the cliché of the red light, we shine the spotlight on those for whom intimacy – whatever the reason – has become a matter of supply and demand. With flushed ears but without a blush of shame, this musical movement performance is an ode to the many forms of paid intimacy.

It sounds like a twisted fairy tale: the woman who needs rescuing and the sleazy little man. Yet this remains the dominant image of sex workers and their clients in our society. Because of the taboo and the limited representation surrounding paid intimacy, there is little room for the diverse perspectives of the people who are themselves part of the world of sex work. A world that – as they know – cannot possibly be captured in a single image.

Good to know

  • The performance will feature English surtitles.
  • Right after the performance, there will be a panel talk of half an hour in the hall (from 20:30 to 21:00)
  • The show has a duration of one hour (19:30 to 20:30). There is no intermission.

Over de makers

Otto Calmeijer Meijburg studeerde in 2020 af aan de afdeling Physical Theatre van de Folkwang Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Essen (DE). Hen werkt als performer en theatermaker in Duitsland en Nederland. In verschillende constellaties en contexten onderzoekt Otto hoe bewegingstheater, een liefde voor science fiction, live muziek, en het extremen op zoeken in spel en improvisatie, samen kunnen komen.

Ulrike Doszmann (1970) is geboren en getogen in het voormalige Oostblok, en kwam naar Nederland om te studeren aan de Fontys Dansacademie in Tilburg. Na haar afstuderen in 1998 begon zij met het maken van eigen voorstellingen. Dat combineert Ulrike met het werk als danser en performer voor onder andere dansgezelschap Vloeistof. Sinds drie jaar geeft ze Movement Classes bij Fontys.
