Op dinsdag 6 november opent Anouar Brahem het Crossing Border Festival met zijn nieuwe project After the Last Sky. Acht jaar na Blue Maqams komt de Tunesische componist en oud-speler terug met een programma van intieme en ontroerende stukken voor oud, cello, piano en contrabas. De titel komt uit een zin van de Palestijnse dichter Mahmoud Darwish: “Where should the birds fly, after the last sky?”

Brahem’s music is rooted in the tradition of Arabic modes, but he constantly reaches outward, drawing inspiration from many different musical worlds. For this project, he brings together an international quartet: pianist Django Bates, cellist Anja Lechner and, for this tour, Norwegian double bassist Mats Eilertsen. Together they create music that feels quiet but speaks volumes, touching on the personal and the political, the local and the universal.
