BECOMING is a fluid bubble full of depth. Each edition is unique and offers a new queer perspective on identity and sexuality. Spectators and artists immerse themselves together in intimacy, party, sensuality, dialogue, art and glitter! At BECOMING, more is better, vulnerability is strength, party is depth and everyone is queer!

In Zaal 3 we present three editions: Decolonized, Trans & Loved and Body Politics.

Welcome to BECOMING Decolonized: the first edition of the series in The Hague! The influence of the colonial past is still felt in our lives. Its effects are very different for each person and position. Hosts Ro Rox Roxy Roxanna Verwey and Nanoah Struik will therefore approach decolonization from an intersectional perspective. How can we, individually and in relation to each other, free ourselves from oppression and how can transformation and social justice become a daily act?

Through music, spoken word and collective dance ritual, we aim to heal ourselves and honour the ancestors. Together, we build a queer space of intimacy within which we can bridge our differences.

Language

BECOMING is always a mix of  English (80%) and Dutch (20%), and also non-linquistic elements and vibes. The event will be presented in simple English. Some of our performances might be in Dutch.

If you don’t speak Dutch please join anyway, you will be able to follow enough of it!

Line-up

Fazle Shairmahomed and host Ro Rox Roxy Roxana Verwey welcome you and guide you through the program:

  • Iyoba Kwamé opens the evening with a ritual rediscovering spirituality and strengthening the connection with ancestors as a form of radical self-love.
  • During a performance, Joelina "JoJo" shows us how Ballroom is a space for decolonization.
  • A conversation with new generation community builders Ligya Wachter (Mil Colores), James Parnell (Reazor Beam), Ricardo Lemmer (founder of Black Queer Holland), and Naomie Pieter, about organizing decolonization.
  • A performance by versatile artist Djuwa Mroivili on the relationship between colonization and the stigmatization of queerness.
  • Choreographer Cody Schuitemaker presents a dance duet that vividly reveals how the colonial past lives on in relationships today.
  • Artist and activist Naomi Pieter shares a ritual dance derived from the philosophy of Tambú and reflects on the film Bubbling Baby.
  • The evening concludes with rhythms by DJ Chinnamasta.

About Fazle Shairmahomed

Fazle Shairmahomed (he/she/they/dem) is the co-curator and partner for this edition. He creates performance rituals and altar installations with dance, plants, film and text. His work focuses on spiritual processes of decolonization and creolization, through which spaces are being created for interactions between different cosmologies and the sensorium. Community is a basis from where they create, which requires (interdisciplinary) collaboration.
