Paradise Circus Island invites you to surrender, to rest your cheek against the cool kitchen tiles, as letters pile up in the hallway, and a body quietly returns to the earth.

You’ve read the headline before: “Person found dead at home after three years. Not reported missing.” It’s happening more and more often. People passing away, unnoticed for months or even years. In 2023, it occurred five times as often as it did at the turn of the century — five times as many people who spoke their final words to an empty room. Their bodies too far gone to tell us anything certain about their last moments. That haunting uncertainty forms the starting point for KASKO’s new performance, directed by theatre maker Hendrik Aerts.

Paradise Circus Island asks you to lie down, cheek on the cold kitchen floor, letters still gathering in the hallway, a body quietly fading from summer into winter, from mud into dust. And no one missing you enough to break down the door. What does life look like as it carries on, while you lie there motionless on the tiles?

With this performance, we peer through the letterbox. We gossip with the neighbours. We listen to the stove that still ticks, the fridge that still hums. And eventually, we break open the front door together with seven characters, each trapped in their own solitude, each stranded on their own island.

This is a performance of song, live music, text, and dance, spoken in multiple languages, with surtitles provided.

About KASKO and the artistic process

The production is created by an interdisciplinary team: Hendrik Aerts (director), Nic Bruckman (writer), Ricarda Franzen (dramaturg), André Pronk (set and lighting designer), Jacqueline Steijlen (costume designer), Manuel Kiros Paolini (choreographer), and Jonathan Bonny (musical director).

Together with a group of emerging performers, they explore how acting, movement, singing, imagery, and music can intertwine , developing a shared artistic language that grows from each individual’s personality, skills, and fascination with the theme.
