    De Constant Rebecqueplein 20-A

This performance explores themes of exoticization, censorship, imagination, friendship, and dreams. The main reason this performance came into being is due to a remote collaboration with Negar, a choreographer from Iran. She is a female dancer and choreographer based in Iran, who has faced political limitations regarding dance, leading to her state of disappearance from the public scene.

The fact that she is choreographing the space without being physically present reflects the importance of collaboration for us, even though she would not be allowed to create her piece in her own context.

Sharing this reality with a Western audience in a Western European context creates certain projections, such as pitying or victimizing. Addressing these projections and the exotification they entail one of the main concepts of the work. How do we deal with these perceptions?

In the last weekend of March, Fariborz Karimi takes over Zaal 3. Next to reprising Oh, Wild Gazelle, Where Are You? he will be showing his latest performance Whispered Dreams on Saturday and Sunday.

About Fariborz Karimi

Fariborz Karimi (Tehran, 1990) is a theater maker, performer and writer living in Amsterdam. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Directing and Acting from Tehran University in 2013, and graduated from the master’s degree in DAS Theater (AHK) in 2023. Oh, Wild Gazelle, Where Are You? was his graduation piece there.

With his artistic practice, Fariborz explores the theatrical space between reality and dream. And questions the meanings of self-censorship in different contexts, fueled by his own experiences. He questions the western desire to continually frame him as being suppressed and censored, where this very framing actually denies him the very freedom he looked for when he came to study and work here.

In his recent works, he attempts to bridge physical space through remote collaborations, collective creations and working with sound, text and video to activate the spectator’s imagination. Fariborz asks socio-political questions through autobiographical and fictional stories, blurring the line between dream and reality.
